Why outsource books?
Many people accumulate a variety of books in their lives, creating a true private library. Such users, but of course also commercial customers are in good hands with LAGERBOX.
If you want to store some of your books outside your own home or business, then you've come to the right place. It is especially the case because our storage units offer the appropriate storage conditions for sensitive books.
How do you store books properly for the long term?
Storing books is not rocket science – what is important? To keep your books in their original condition, you should follow a few basic rules. LAGERBOX supports you with the right storage conditions – and here are three practical tips:
3 tips for storing books correctly:
- Which bookshelf is suitable for storage?
- Use shelves made of untreated, resin-free wood (e.g., cedar wood) – these repel pests.
- The shelves should not stand directly on the floor.
- Leave some space between the shelves and the wall – this ensures air circulation.
- A shelf with doors or a cabinet provides additional protection from light, dust, and temperature fluctuations. - How should books be sorted on the shelf?
- Sort books by size and place them upright and not too close together on the shelf.
- Avoid tilting or overfilling – this can lead to deformation.
- When storing books flat, place heavy books at the bottom and lighter ones at the top. - How should stored books be cared for?
- Dust regularly with a soft brush.
- Keep books closed so that no dust gets between the pages.
- Optional: store sensitive copies in acid-free archive boxes.
What can damage books – and how LAGERBOX prevents it
Paper is susceptible to various environmental influences that can deteriorate the condition of your books in addition to the natural aging process. However, both can be prevented or at least significantly reduced. If you keep a close eye on your book collection, you may notice that some copies yellow faster than others.
This is often due to the composition of the paper. Older books often still contain acidic chemicals that decompose the paper under the influence of UV light. Newer books are usually more durable. If you prevent direct sunlight, you can significantly reduce the risk of yellowing—this applies to the storage of old books as well as modern titles. Our storage boxes are light-protected because they have no windows. They only become bright when you actively switch on the light. Perfect conditions for storing your books properly.
Climatic conditions: Humidity is the biggest enemy
The right indoor climate is essential if you want to store books. Books do not like moisture – quite the opposite: they need a consistently dry climate to prevent warping or mold growth. Therefore, it is usually not a good idea to store books in the basement or garage, as these areas have irregular temperatures and humidity levels that can damage your books.
In our storage boxes, the humidity is constantly below the recommended limit of 60%. The temperature is also stable and cool. This means that your books are always safe with us – and better off than in any garage or attic.
Pests? Not at LAGERBOX
A frequently underestimated risk when storing old books: pests. Lice, moths, silverfish, and larvae are often found in garages, basements, or unfinished attics. These pests like to feed on paper. Symptoms include light-colored marks or bite marks on the edges of books. You can prevent this with natural remedies such as lavender or ginkgo leaves.
But at LAGERBOX, this is usually not necessary: our storage rooms are not only light- and climate-controlled—they are also difficult for pests to access. This is how we create the perfect storage for books—even for collectibles or works of high monetary value.
Did you know? High temperatures not only attract insects but also make the book glue brittle.
How does LAGERBOX ensure security?
Particularly valuable books not only need the right climatic conditions—they also need security. What security measures protect my books?
The 4 aspects of security at LAGERBOX:
- Access protection – Only you have access to your storage box.
- Building security – Alarm-protected locations.
- Box alarm – Some boxes have additional alarm systems.
- Video surveillance – In all corridors and hallways.
A secure book storage facility protects against theft and unauthorized access – and gives you the peace of mind that your works are in good hands.
