We are continuing our expansion course at full speed—and this time, it’s taking us to Recklinghausen. We are pleased to announce the purchase of an 8,000-square-metre plot at Berghäuser Strasse 1. In the coming years, it will become home to a modern LAGERBOX facility that will significantly strengthen our presence in the Ruhr area. For us, this project is far more than just another dot on the map. It is a clear sign of commitment to our growth strategy, to innovative service concepts, and to the sustainable development of our site network.
Why Recklinghausen?
Recklinghausen sits in the northern Ruhr area—a densely populated region with a vibrant economy and strong demand for flexible storage space. The city offers an ideal location with direct access to the A2, A43, and A52 motorways, and close proximity to Herne, Marl, and Gelsenkirchen. From a strategic perspective, this is a perfect fit: We’re entering a strong region with plenty of untapped self-storage potential, while creating synergies with our existing sites in North Rhine-Westphalia.
Two construction phases for maximum efficiency
The project will be completed in two consecutive construction phases—a strategy that will allow us to establish an early market presence while ensuring we can reach the optimum final stage in the long term.

Phase one: Conversion of the existing building
The property currently houses one single-storey building. Instead of tearing it down straight away, we are making use of the existing structure and adapting it to our LAGERBOX standards. Result: A smart internal layout for maximum usable storage space, modern access systems, secure locking technology, and building systems that maintain constant temperature and humidity. The big advantage: We can offer storage space at an early stage of a project without having to wait for new building to be completed. The start of this conversion work is planned for the first half of 2026.
Phase two: New building with three floors and drive-in convenience
Once the remodelling phase is complete, we will start work on a brand-new building. The plans envision a three-storey structure, including the ground floor, designed to fit perfectly with our brand representation. The centrepiece will be a spacious drive-in area, which will allow customers to drive their vehicles right up to their storage units—sheltered from the weather, convenient and without long walks. There will also be a ramp for easy access with larger vans and HGVs. This new building will be both highly functional and a striking landmark in Recklinghausen’s cityscape.
Strong capacity for private and business customers
When fully completed in 2027, our Recklinghausen site will offer around 4,000 square metres of storage space. Around 750 storage units in various sizes are planned to meet a wide range of needs. Private customers benefit from flexible solutions for when they are moving house, renovating, going abroad, or for seasonal storage. Business customers can find permanent storage space for documents, merchandise, or equipment. The location will also be an attractive offering for contractors, clubs and organisations, and skilled trade businesses.
Digital, flexible and future-oriented
Recklinghausen is set to join our LAGERBOX easy fleet. This means that customers have 24-hour access to their storage units, entirely independent of fixed opening hours. The digital system offers maximum convenience, reduces paperwork, and enables particularly efficient site management. We also investing in sustainable technology solutions that minimise energy consumption and operating costs. In this way, we combine comfort, cost-effectiveness and environmental responsibility in a modern site concept.
A project of strategic importance
For us, the move to Recklinghausen is more than just a construction project. It reflects our goal of investing specifically in regions with strong growth potential, where we can raise self-storage provision to a new level. At the same time, we are consolidating our presence in the Ruhr area, expanding our customer network, and offering new target groups access to our services.
Our two-phase construction approach bridges the gap between rapid market entry and achieving the optimum long-term expansion stage. The result will be a location that is already efficient in its initial operating phase and will set standards in the final expansion stage.

There is still a lot on the agenda before the planned start of construction in 2026: finalising building plans, obtaining permits, selecting partner companies, and developing our marketing and sales strategies. During this time, we will also work closely together internally to draw on experience from other projects and implement the best possible solutions for Recklinghausen.
